MARK SMITH indulges in a fresh mango body scrub and banana wrap during his exploration of Phuket’s luxury spas - with the sound of lapping waves and birdsong. No CD soundtrack was required…

Amanpuri, Phuket

Set among coconut trees, Amanpuri epitomises luxury in a relaxed, eastern style. Thai-styled pavilions overlook the Andaman Sea which can be enjoyed from the resorts private beach.

The Aman Spa is a highlight and overlooks Bang Tao bay offering yoga and meditation and a full range of Thai-inspired treatments. The rooms are all individual pavilions filled with natural light and include a private steam room, shower, bath, dressing area and outdoor meditation sala.

After a long flight, the Amanpuri Awakening massage was the perfect remedy. It combines dry massage to prepare and relax the muscles, steam to warm the muscles and open the airways, and a heated Thai herbal compress, which included a fantastic stomach massage.

Book it:
Rooms at Amanpuri start from US$1,150 including return airport transfers,  excluding tax.
The Aman Awakening treatment: 120 minutes long is THB 8,000 (approx. £147)

Point Yamu by COMO

Situated on a remote cape on the busy island of Phuket, Point Yamu by COMO is a true escape and a design buffs dream. Its minimalism raises the bar for luxury holidays in Thailand.

The rooms are pure white, with furniture crafted from distressed wood. It’s very coastal-chic with blue signature fabrics and the unique Point Yamu pattern print seamlessly connecting the room with the view of the turquoise waters of Phang Nga Bay.

COMO Shambhala Retreat offers yoga, Pilates and fitness options alongside more chilled experiences, facials and a host of body treatments. Don’t mess around, just book the signature COMO Shambhala Massage, the long flowing movements and head to toe massage strokes induce a state of bliss in an instant.

Post-treatment, make sure you check out the outdoor relaxation area with beds and a plunge pool overlooking the bay.

Book it:
Double rooms from £166 per night including breakfast and free yoga class, excluding tax and service.
COMO Shambhala Signature Massage: 4125 Baht (approx. £75) for 75 mins.

Traditional Thai Massage: 4125 Baht (approx. £75) for 75mins.

Banyan Tree Phuket

Banyan Tree Phuket is a world of its own. The flagship of the spa and hotel group, all accommodation in the resort is based around villas and they are sublime, blending Thai inspired décor with modern comforts. Landscaped with palms, trees and scented flowering frangipani trees, you can lose yourself for a week or more.

The spa pavilions in the Spa Sanctuary are a must for spa lovers. On arrival you are greeted by therapists who conducted a welcome foot ritual using green tea and honey scrub and a relaxing shoulder and neck massage. Breakfast is enjoyed in the garden, by the pool. There’s a steam room, outdoor jet pool, meditation sala and poolside terrace.

The Banyan Tree Spa is set amongst tropical gardens which gives it a sense of authenticity and intimacy. Treatments are offered in individual outdoor villas, open sided but surrounded by a walled garden and little moat. It’s truly Thai and very authentic. What I loved is that you felt the breeze on your skin and the sound of birds, which doesn’t come from the cd soundtrack. It’s live.

The spa menu is extensive and we opted for the Lomi Lomi massage. Long, full continuous movements and definitive needing techniques based on the Hawaiian technique, it was perfectly placed to achieve a sense of calm and relaxation. After the treatment you enjoy some relaxation time in the villa with ginger tea and fresh tropical fruit and yoghurt.

Sri panwa, Phuket

Sri panwa is an exclusive mix of private residences and pool villas set in lush tropical surroundings. Each pool villas has its own 12-metre infinity  pool which wraps around the bedroom and separate living space. There’s a day bed, two bathrooms, terrace and sun loungers. It’s peaceful, tranquil and very, very private.

The Cool Spa is a secluded space with floating yoga decks and shallow pools set around the reception. It offers views across the bay with treatment rooms which are spacious and feature a waterfall tumbling over from the rooftop. This constant sound of water is calming and relaxing.

Fresh local ingredients are used in the treatments and I had a fresh mango body scrub - fruity, fragrant and softening on the skin which precedes a Thai style body massage with Aromatic Thai oil massage.

It wasn’t rough or too vigorous, but firm and definite. I returned the next day for a banana body wrap and Thai Herb healer massage with a warm compress of Thai herbs. The use of fresh fruits made this a spa experience to remember.

Book it:
The price for Thai aromatic oil (60 min) is 3,500 THB (approx £64)
Mango Body scrub is 2,200 THB (approx £40).
Pool Suite is 21,000 THB (approx £382)
Pool Villa is 32,000 THB (approx £582)
