As a health and beauty writer I was lucky enough to receive an almost daily consignment of so-called “miracle” lotions and potions which always promised eternal youth.
To be honest, I hardly remember receiving the newly-launched Elemis Pro-Collagen Marine Cream back in 2003 but this was my chosen cream of the month and I duly applied it morning and night.
Slowly but surely my skin started to regain “that bloom of youth” promised on the packaging, which was even more amazing considering I was living in Dubai where temperatures can rise to 50C.
But then panic started to set in as I was coming to the bottom of the jar.
After six weeks of use my skin was plump and hydrated allowing the easy application of make-up.
For the first time of reviewing a free product I suddenly felt the need to actually buy (yes, buy) a replacement pot of this amazing marine, anti-ageing cream which, seven years on, has now become the best-seller product for Elemis.
So, what is the secret of this wonder cream?
The answer is surprisingly a fan-shaped brown algae, scientifically known as padina pavonica and seaweed with a dash of mimosa, rose and gingko biloba liposomes.
Padina Pavonica is central to the creams activity and is hand-picked daily by scuba divers from the temperate waters of Malta and left to dry under the warm sun.
The purified extract, of this unlikely elixir of youth, radically transforms skin cells back to being almost as good as new.
Added to this is porphyridum seaweed, which is a unicellular algae rich in moisturising fatty acids and chlorella seaweed which contains amino acids responsible for slowing down the deterioration of collagen and elastin which helps in the fight against ageing, wrinkles and puffiness.
And finally, add to this the dynamic action of mimosa and rose absolutes which hydrates and adds the unique aroma and gingko biloba liposomes renown for it anti-ageing properties and you have a little pot of magic.
According to Noella Gabriel, Director of Treatment and Product Development at Elemis, the launch of the face cream was a big departure for the company who, until then, had focused on the body not the face.
“This was a bold move for us as we realised we had to enter the anti-ageing arena with a brand that would turn heads,” Noella told The SPA Traveller.
“Developing the marine cream took three years plus two efficacy trials as the
first results were not great so I worked on upping the active ingredients. “This
time the results were amazing as it showed a reduction in the depth of wrinkles
by 78 per cent and an increase in the moisture and hydration levels by 45 per
cent. “It may have taken another four or five months before the Pro-Collagen
Marine Cream was launched but it was certainly worth the wait as it has been our
top seller now for seven years.
“The anti-ageing market is typically made up of heavy creams but our product was the first one with a light, gel-texture which immediately penetrates to the deeper levels of the epidermis and has no greasy oily after-feel and best of all is suitable for all skin types.”
