Q: What was the inspiration for Sh’Zen?
The company was originally founded in 1989 when research showed there was a growing demand among South African women for more natural, beauty products. Since then, Sh'Zen has been a pioneer in developing award-winning, high-treatment products that ensure a more beautiful body from head to toe.
Combining an expertise in aromatherapy and cosmetic science, Sh'Zen has given birth to the most exquisite ranges – skin care, hands, feet, hair and body - and is committed to producing pure and effective beauty products.
With this commitment and vision, Sh’Zen has grown from just seven products in 1989 to more than 120 today.
Besides incredible support from loyal customers throughout South Africa, and internationally in the UK, Mauritius, New Zealand, Ireland, Botswana, Sh'Zen also enjoys support from beauty therapists, chiropodists, podiatrists and even medical doctors.
Q: What is the philosophy behind the products?
Sh'Zen is the Japanese word for natural. It was chosen because it reflects the on-going philosophy of the company - products of the highest quality with active ingredients that are primarily natural and at affordable prices.
Sh'Zen believes that nature has the answer to all our beauty needs. They recognise the healing and regenerative potential inherent in nature and harness these energies in their beauty products.
Active essential, plant, nut and seed oils and concentrated essence all contain regenerative and reparative qualities. Working with a top cosmetic scientist and a clinical aromatherapist, Sh’Zen expertly combine and synergise ingredients for optimum affinity with your skin.

Q: What are your Hero products and why do you think they have become so popular?

Q: Are you in any spas around the world?
Yes, in Mauritius and starting in Kenya – many salons and smaller spa’s in South Africa.
Q: What are your top three tips for looking after your skin?
Skin care: cleanse, and cleanse again – never go without moisturiser (SPF 30) and also FEED your skin with specialised treatments and it will reward you with brilliance!

We bring out around eight – 12 treatment products each year
Q: Who are the faces behind Sh’Zen?
Managing Director, Ingrid Alexander signed up as a Sh'Zen consultant soon after the company was founded By Gail Reith.
She read about the business in the September 1989 issue of Fair Lady magazine, which announced Sh'Zen as the winner of the magazine's Business Starter award. She says she called the founder "on an impulse".
It was the start of an incredible journey - one that led her and fellow consultant Glynis Richardson to buy the company in 2001.
"The products are beautiful - physically and energetically,” she said.
Director, Glynis Richardson has been with Sh'Zen since the beginning. She too read about the company in Fair lady and says two words jumped out at her: dermatitis and treatment.
"I suffered with chronic dermatitis on my hands and, having tried everything on the market without much success, I was ready to give this new range a try,” she said.
The products brought her immediate relief – so she had to share them with others. She signed up as a consultant and began one of the most exciting chapters of her life.
She says Sh'Zen continues to bring her opportunities and rewards. "Every day is exciting, bringing new challenges and new opportunities to meet people from every walk of life!"
Jane Hanworth became Managing Director of Sh’Zen UK Ltd after she tried her first Sh'Zen products when she lived in Cape Town, South Africa.
“I was so impressed that I placed a large order with my friend who was selling the products. She asked me if I would be interested in selling Sh'Zen myself but I kept telling her 'I can't sell,” she said.
“By the time I had placed about five more orders and received my fabulous free 'start-up' kit I was hooked and realised that the products actually sold themselves. I can't wait to introduce the UK to our exciting range of ‘natural’ products.”
