Tried and tested

Here comes the summer

The SPA Traveller samples a selection of top products to help you beat the heat...

Moderate Protection Spray by Eau Thermale, Avène

Made from Avène Thermal Spring Water this sun spray is ideal for people with sensitive skin or conditions such as eczema or psoriasis. The easy-to-apply white cream sprays on effortlessly and exudes a refreshing fragrance. We tested the 20 SPF factor, which is paraben and alcohol free, and enjoyed this non-greasy, ultra light emulsion which we found to be very water resistant - vital when you’re on a beach holiday.

People suffering from eczema may find this to be kinder to the skin than chemical-based creams as it contains the non-chemical mineral titanium dioxide. Chemical sunscreens are absorbed into the skin while those containing titanium dioxide sit on the skin and act as a barrier. For extremely sensitive or intolerant skin conditions try the SPF 50+ White High Protection Cream which is a fragrance, free, 100 per cent mineral screen with no chemical filters (£12.95).

Verdict: Perfect for people with skin conditions

Anti-redness rich moisturising cream by Eau Thermale Avene
Exposure to the sun or hormonal changes can often result in facial flushing which, if prolonged, can lead to broken veins and a red uneven complexion, also known as rosacea.

Eau Thermale’s anti-redness range contains Butcher’s Broom and citrus extract which has toning properties to help strengthen capillaries while Dextran Sulphate helps ease local water retention.

The first thing you notice when applying this moisturiser is the slight green tint which also helps to ease the appearance of redness in the face. After a few weeks use on my face, which was quite rosy and sprinkled with a few broken veins, has become clearer and even.

Verdict: Ideal for turning a red face into one with a clear rosy glow
Cost £12.95

Lily of the Valley Bath Oil by Penhaligon’s

This modern-classic is sweet, fresh and graceful with a very fine floral and is ideal for a cool soak after a hot, hectic day at the office. The fragrance opens with warm soft touches of citrus and bergamot before beguiling you with a creamy white heart overflowing with rose, ylang ylang, jasmine and lily of the valley. The sandalwood and oakmoss anchor the fragrance, strengthening it, adding persistence and longevity.

This is classic Lily of the Valley but its interpretation by Penhaligon’s is strikingly modern. On some skins it develops a grassy hay-like quality, on others it is strikingly ‘white’, peppery and very elegant. As the oil is presented in a beautiful, glass decanter it also makes a classy addition to any boudoir. And the best bit is that the fragrance lingers in your bathroom for days…

Verdict: Luxury bath oil because you’re worth it
Cost £35.00

Everything Balm by Trilogy

Where to start? Tends to be the first question when you open a jar of Everything Balm as according to the label this can be used “anywhere, anytime”. I started with lips which seemed like a good idea on a hot, dry day and immediately felt the soothing effects of the natural ingredients packed into this New Zealand-made product from Trilogy. I could immediately taste the geranium but buried deep in its layers is everything from honey, rose hip, evening primrose, jojoba, lavender and frankincense. As the balm works its moisturising magic on skin, lips and cuticles this is ideal for anyone travelling light this summer.

Verdict: Best natural all-in-one product
Cost £12.00

Age Proof CO10 Booster Serum by Trilogy

This new serum from Trilogy’s Age Proof range helps give a boost to dull, tired and stressed skin. I first started to test this potent serum towards the end of winter, when, let’s face it, our skin is not looking its best, and was amazed how quickly my pale, dehydrated complexion started to liven up. The key ingredient is Co-enzyme Q10 which helps to boost collagen production which aids skin repair. This works alongside the natural ingredient of Tamanu oil which is rich in essential fatty acids and helps to deeply moisturise the skin.

Verdict: It worked for me

And it certainly worked for me as I used the day cream alongside the equally effective eye cream (18.99 pounds)

Elemis Pro-Collagen Quartz Lift Mask by Elemis

Busy? Elemis has acknowledged that women today just don’t have time to apply a sticky mask and then wait hours for it to set, like our mother’s did. So, the Pro-Collagen Quartz Lift Mask is quick and easy to apply and can be left on while we sleep. Perfect. And, if you’re working from home or running around with the vacuum you can put on the soothing, white cream and simply wash it off when you’re ready to re-apply make-up and hit the town. After four weeks my face muscles feel more relaxed and fine lines around my eyes have diminished. Elemis attribute these results to a fan-shaped brown algae, scientifically known as padina pavonica which is hand-picked daily by scuba divers from the temperate waters of Malta and left to dry under the warm sun.

The purified extract, of this unlikely elixir of youth, radically transforms skin cells back to being almost as good as new.

Verdict: It’s the best non-surgical face lift you can get
Cost £55.00
