A spa that gives you time to breathe

CHLOE URQUHART and her family enjoy some much-needed time out at one of Britain's top family-friendly spa hotels, Chewton Glen in Hampshire.

Time is our most precious commodity and as most parents know this is always in short supply when you’re running after the kids, juggling work and running the house.

But the luxury of time is what a stay at Chewton Glen, a country house hotel in Hampshire, offered my family during a weekend stay. During those two tranquil days I not only clocked up two relaxing spa treatments but even managed dinner with my husband!

We arrived at the hotel after a quick dash down the M3 followed by a leisurely drive through the New Forest – our boys squealing with delight as they spotted the famous ponies grazing a few feet from the car. We swept up the grand driveway to reception and were warmly welcomed by the concierge who organised the bell boy to take our many odd-shaped Thomas the Tank bags to the room.

Since the arrival of children our more stylish Louis Vuitton trunks have been relegated to the attic! It’s detail which makes a holiday memorable and the boys were very excited to find their very own mini bathrobes and slippers laid out for them in the vast bathroom.

This was the shape of things to come and we seemed to spend the next two days relaxing in our robes dapping back and forth to the spa – which was literally down the corridor.

My first treatment was a wonderfully relaxing Ananda facial using organic products from the Ila-Spa range. My therapist described it as “reflexology for the head” and as the treatment progressed I could feel what she meant. The wonderful products were complimented with an intense head massage which could leave some people feeling a little dizzy but helped me to unwind and let go.

Ila-Spa was founded by Denise Leicester, a leading aromatherapist and healer who, having spent a lifetime understanding and exploring the dynamics of natural skincare and healing, created a range of organic products that seamlessly fuses holistic wellbeing with beautiful skin.

Denise' vision was to develop a luxury collection of products designed to treat the skin and nourish the emotions to create inner and outer beauty. The products are individually hand-blended in the Cotswolds and use ingredients that come from plants and minerals which are sourced from some of the most remote, untainted parts of the world.

This is known as Ila's Beyond Organic philosophy. As I lay on the treatment bed by therapist told me that even the spa music I was listening to was being sung by Denise Leicester. For some strange reason hearing her voice effortlessly fill the room with music seemed to help me connect with her philosophy and products.

The hotel is so family-friendly, my husband was able to enjoy the spa facilities and indulge in an Indian head massage and Lomi Lomi Hawaiian massage while the children played in the ‘Kids Club’ which is complimentary for hotel guests during morning and afternoon sessions.

Spending an hour or two using the spa’s facilities before and after a treatment is a must – rotating between the hydrotherapy pool, aromatherapy saunas, outdoor whirlpool, to the crystal steam rooms which wouldn't be out of place in a traditional Hamman helps to open the pores and relax the muscles which means you get more out of your treatment. It also means the spa is better value because you get so much more for your money.

As I prepared for my Lomi Lomi Hawaiian treatment, the therapist offered aromatic oils to choose from, each with its own unique fragrance. Lomi Lomi is a unique flowing and deeply relaxing full body massage. The gentle massage works deeply into the muscles with flowing strokes, allowing the recipient to relax and give into a nurturing touch. You could almost imagine you are lying on a pacific island beach being caressed by the waves. The massage worked a treat and I did actually drift off into a light sleep, which is something I rarely do.

After a relaxing swim in the 17-metre ozone treated swimming pool and warm shower I returned to the spa café for a light lunch of salmon and fresh crispy salad, with a light infusion of tasty dressing. It was absolutely delicious in a perfect setting.

For those staying longer than a couple of days or anyone wanting some additional fresh air and outdoor activity, there is a quaint par 3 golf course and fabulous 30-minute woodland walk through the forest and surrounding countryside to the nearby beach which offers spectacular views of the Isle of Wight.

While we indulged in the spa, the kids had so much fun painting, doing puzzles, playing with train sets and enjoying story time they couldn’t wait to get back to the cosy club, for the afternoon session.

With Wellington’s at the ready the afternoon was spent exploring the vast Chewton Glen gardens, enjoying the autumn colours, and collecting newly fallen leaves for a seasonal nature basket.

As the club closed the children’s session began in the heated pool housed in a beautiful orangery. After an hour of splashing with their new friends it was time for tea. Wow, it was just like home. Dishes of sausages, fish fingers and chips, ice-cream, strawberries and other fruit for dessert. Just what every child likes. This child-friendly feast topped a fantastic day-out for the kids.

Lomi Lomi massage:

A Hawaiian massage tradition that was originally taught only within the Hawaiian family. Lomi Lomi combines the use of prayer (pule), breath (ha), and energy (mana) with a variety of massage strokes to release "blocked" areas of tension in the body and can give the recipient the feeling of many hands on the body at once.

From beginning to end, one stroke can cover an entire region of the body - sometimes the entire body – and is continuous, which gives the recipient a feeling of a never-ending massage.

Many spa-goers say it is like the ocean washing over them, and even experienced massage therapists say that they have never before experienced such a wonderful massage.

The Hawaiian belief is that trauma is held at a deep cellular level in the body, even if we feel the mind has ‘dealt’ with it. Lomi Lomi works at a deep level in the body, releasing and healing past trauma. LauLima (healing touch), Ha (breathwork) and PaiPai (rocking/pulsing) are often used during a LomiLomi treatment.

These, combined with LomiLomi massage are powerful and excellent ways to cleanse the emotional body and allow fresh mana (divine power) to flow through emotional blocks thereby releasing their hold on you.

Hawaiian’s say it is the ‘dance of massage,’ and is as wonderful to give as to receive.
